Description:
Here is an example of a very good quality early antique five glass “onion top” Victorian rosewood banjo / wheel mercury barometer, in excellent working condition, circa 1860, by W. N. Telford, Chester. The barometer frame is constructed of top quality solid rosewood with a classic “onion top” pediment, this design is repeated at the foot of the barometer. At the top of the barometer is a small round-silvered metal dial housing a hygrometer, protected by convex glass. A hygrometer is an instrument used for measuring the moisture content in the atmosphere. Further below sits a silvered metal backed mercury thermometer, which allows you to read the temperature in Fahrenheit units of measure. Further below is a small elegant convex glass mirror, flanked by a reeded frame. Further below, is a large round convex glass and brass bezel, which houses and protects the ornately inscribed silvered mercury pressure dial. There is a simple guide on the dial, which explains that if the pressure falls, the weather will be wet with more wind. If the pressure rises, the weather will be dry with less wind. The main hand points to the barometric pressure and there is a second hand that you can move with the metal knob below to mark the days reading to see if the pressure rises or falls. At the base of the barometer is a small-silvered dial incorporating a spirit level with the inscribed name of the maker of the barometer, W. N. Telford of Chester. On the back of the barometer, it still retains the original metal hanging hook. All in all, this is a practical but very elegant barometer, which is in excellent condition. A two-year warranty is included with the barometer.
As this is a mercury barometer, the mercury tube in the back of the barometer will be plugged in preparation for transportation. Once the barometer is in its final resting place, the plug needs to be removed. Instructions for unplugging the mercury tube and setting it up will be provided with barometer.
The barometer features a rich brown rosewood colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and the years of care and cleaning they have received.
