The chest is stamped with the cabinetmaker’s stamp name and date on the second drawer. Constructed with a single piece top, it features the original top quality inset brass drop handles, brass corner brackets and further brass strap-work to the frame. The chest boasts good quality brass swan neck side carrying handles. The drawers feature later brass key escutcheons on subtle cushion fronts. The brass corner brackets and brass straps were used to protect the chest whilst in transit during campaigns. The drawers are in excellent working order, are clean inside and close flush to the frame. The chest is constructed of solid walnut with mahogany hand-dovetailed drawer linings. It is quite unusual to see military chests constructed of walnut. The drawers feature working lever locks and a key. The chest features later screw-on (detachable) turned feet. The chest splits into two sections for easy transportation.
Provenance:
This chest was made by Arthur Foley & Son cabinetmakers of Salisbury, England. The chest is stamped with the cabinetmaker’s stamp name and date on the second drawer. The town of Salisbury in Wiltshire has long been home to the English armed forces, with the Salisbury plains being a large training ground.
Condition Report:
This military chest is in very good condition. There are nominal old use marks to the corners and leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The chest features the original brass inset handles, brass strap-work and corner brackets. The key escutcheons are later additions. There are no ink stains, cup marks or burns to the top of the chest. All drawers close flush to the frame. The chest boasts a rich brown walnut colour with a nice patination. The drawers features working lever locks with a key. The chest features later screw-on (detachable) feet. This item is very well made, solid in joint and ready to use.
