Description:
This is a good quality retro vintage English nest of two G Plan Fresco / Astro tables; designed by Victor Wilkins in the 1960s for G Plan, which are in excellent original condition. Boasting an iconic mid 20th century design, they stack tidily into each other and are easily pulled out when required. Constructed of solid teak, the tables feature moulded cross banded tops, supported by joined curved side supports. The side supports are shaped to form four feet which incorporate a single stretcher to the rear of the larger table, and one stretcher front and rear to the smaller table. The tables are solidly constructed and ready to use.
This vintage nest of tables boast a mellow brown mahogany colour and they are in excellent robust condition. This is an extremely useful piece of furniture and a great asset to have in any living or dining room or hallway, as they consume very little space.
This truly is a beautiful item with quality construction and is original throughout. This item would certainly grace any home, so don’t miss out on your chance to own such a lovely antique item.
G Plan History:
G Plan was founded by Ebeneezer Gomme in 1898, in High Wycombe. The business expanded and by 1922 it had 300 employees, and by 1927 a second factory was open at Spring Gardens. During the Second World War, the Utility scheme set up by the Board of Trade limited the cost and range of items produced. Thus, when the scheme ended in 1952, there was sudden demand for new furniture designs. G Plan capitalised on this in 1953 by producing a range of furniture for fitting out an entire house and could be purchased on a piece-by-piece basis, allowing for buyers on a budget. Part of G Plans success was owed to their marketing strategy, which included advertisements in magazines and at the cinema, as well as showrooms. Competition from Danish furniture prompted the creation of a ‘Danish Modern’ range, which rendered G Plans earlier designs as outdated. Eventually, G Plan’s popularity began to wane. The Gomme family retired in 1987 and sold the business to the directors. Three years later, it was again sold to the Christie Tyler group. In 1996 the Morris Furniture Group acquired the licence to make and market G Plan Cabinet furniture in Glasgow, operating separately to the upholstery business. G Plan Upholstery Ltd, now based at a modern factory and offices near Melksham, Wiltshire, continues to manufacture most of its sofa and armchair products in the UK. Following the 2005 collapse of Christie Tyler, G Plan was acquired by Sofa Brands International, a holding company, alongside the Parker Knoll and Duresta upholstery brands. G Plan Cabinets was sold by Morris to Sofa Brands in 2015, and cabinet manufacturing ceased. Sofa Brands was acquired in 2015 by its management team and Promethean Investments, a private equity firm. In the same year the company moved its registered office to G Plan’s Melksham address. As of 2017, G Plan was a wholly owned subsidiary of Sofa Brands International.
