Here is an example of a superb quality and rare George III oak potboard dresser base and rack displaying a fantastic rich colour, circa 1780 originating from Montgomeryshire, mid Wales. The style and colour of this oak dresser was indicative to this area due to its more moderate terrain, rich in mineral content. The dresser features a cavetto cornice above a closed rack with wide vertical pine boards. The three graduating shelves, each with plate beads (to stop plates sliding forward) can support all manner of plate sizes on four levels. Below, the base has been made using a pegged construction method. The base features a two-plank top and four cockbeaded drawers. The drawers feature oak drawer lining with pine drawer bottoms constructed with hand dovetail joints. The drawers boast their original brass knobs. To the front of the dresser can be seen lovely medullary rays in the oak grain. Further below, is an elegant cockbeaded frieze above a wavy shaped apron. The base stands on four-baluster ring turned legs, which connects to a two-plank reeded open potboard lower area below. The potboard base also features a plate bead.
As the dresser features its original polish, it boasts a superb rich golden oak colour, which has been created from over 200 years of care and cleaning it has received.
