This is a superb quality antique Victorian 3ft wide solid oak carved monks’ bench, circa 1870 – 1890. The monks’ bench features a peg hinge tabletop, which is carved on both sides. The tabletop can be adjusted to act as a backrest or a tabletop. Below, the back is attached to the base with reeded solid arms. The seat is hinged and reveals a useful large storage area below for shoes and willies. The central frame carving to the front of the bench below the seat depicts “Bacchus”, the Greek god of wine and fertility. Surrounding this are floral carvings. To the side of the base there are pretty lattice carved panels. The bench is built using peg construction. This bench features the original polish and patination and thus the colour of this settle is superb.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms from the hallway, dining room or kitchen. This item would certainly grace any home and a great investment, as they are an extremely functional. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report:
The item is in excellent condition and is commensurate with its age. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The hinges are in good working order. Free of woodworm, solid in joint and ready to use.
