Here is a stunning example of an antique Chippendale style mahogany Gainsborough / open armchair, circa 1890, in very good condition. This chair has been inspired the original Gainsborough armchair, which was originally made in England in the mid to late 18th century. The chair boasts a very good quality and early hand stitched floral petit point and needlepoint floral tapestry, incorporating a bird scene to the back and seat, on a brown background. The date of the upholstery has been discreetly worked into the needlepoint as “P.B. 1929”; this was the date the chair was re-upholstered. The seat retains its original horsehair filling, secured by webbing, so that you do not sink into the seat but at the same time it is extremely comfortable. Matching braiding completes the upholstery. The chair features a high back with open scroll end mahogany arms on shaped down swept supports connected to the seat frame. The frieze of the chair frame incorporates stunning quality floral blind fretwork carving, which extends to the shoulders of the cabriole legs. The cabrioles legs terminate on very good quality carved ball and claw feet (the claws are pronounced, which is a sign of quality). To the back of the chair, there is a dark green backing with a red backing to the underside of the chair. The chair features elegant cabriole legs to the rear.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms from the bedroom, living room or hallway. This item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is extremely functional. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
The chair frame features a rich brown mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
